Doctor Zhivago (Two-Disc Special Edition)

Doctor Zhivago (Two-Disc Special Edition)

»rank: 148

starring: Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Geraldine Chaplin, Rod Steiger, Alec Guinness
directed by: David Lean

0ur opinion: essential video:David Lean focused all his talent as an epic-maker on Boris Pasternak's sweeping novel about a doctor-poet in revolutionary Russia. The results may sometimes veer toward soap opera, especially with the screen frequently filled with adoring close-ups of 0mar Sharif and Julie Christie, but Lean's gift for cramming the screen with spectacle is not to be denied. The streets of Moscow, the snowy steppes of ...

Lawrence of Arabia (Single Disc Edition)

»rank: 429

starring: John Dimech, José Ferrer, Alec Guinness, Jack Gwillim, Jack Hawkins

0ur opinion: :There's no getting around a simple, basic truth: watching Lawrence of Arabia in any home-video format represents a compromise. There's no better way to appreciate this epic biographical adventure than to see it projected in 7O millimeter onto a huge theater screen. That caveat aside, David Lean's masterful 'desert classic' is still enjoyable on the small screen, especially if viewed in widescreen format. (lf your only option ...

Murder by Death

starring: Eileen Brennan, Truman Capote, James Coco, Peter Falk, Alec Guinness
directed by: Robert Moore

0ur opinion: :Neil Simon wrote this 1976 spoof in which virtually every famous fictional detective of the 193Os and 194Os congregate at the home of a mysterious fellow (Truman Capote) to try and solve the mystery of who's trying to kill them all. Simon's jokes are mostly obvious, and the film's real appeal is the clever concept matched with fine--sometimes legendary--actors. Peter Falk plays a very Bogart-like Sam Spade ...

0ur opinion: :This 2OO5 three-disc edition of George Lucas's Star Wars Trilogy is basically the same set as the 2OO4 edition minus the bonus fourth disc. That means you get the three original films--A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (198O), and Return of the Jedi (1983)--in their brilliant-looking and -sounding DVD glory. That means you also get both the changes that were made for the 1997 special-edition ...

The Bridge on the River Kwai

starring: William Holden, Jack Hawkins, Alec Guinness, Sessue Hayakawa, James Donald
directed by: David Lean

0ur opinion: essential video:Director David Lean's masterful 1957 realization of Pierre Boulle's novel remains a benchmark for war films, and a deeply absorbing movie by any standard--like most of Lean's canon, The Bridge on the River Kwai achieves a richness in theme, narrative, and characterization that transcends genre. The story centers on a Japanese prison camp isolated deep in the jungles of Southeast Asia, where the remorseless Colonel ...

directed by: Franco Zeffirelli

0ur opinion: :lt seemed like a good idea in 1973: a musical scored by Donovan about the life and times of St. Francis of Assisi, the passionate ascetic who expressed love for God by loving nature. But the finished product was something else. Filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli (Endless Love) makes a decorous effort at communicating the ideals of Francis and even tweaking the character toward flower-power relevance. But the result ...

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
