Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

»rank: 1128

starring: Steve Martin, Michael Caine, Glenne Headly, Anton Rodgers, Barbara Harris
directed by: Frank Oz

0ur opinion: :0ne s got a sophisticated suave and debonair con act. The other s got...well an act. Together Steve Martin and Michael Caine are Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and they re absolutely ruining the Riviera in this hilarious battle of wits and double-crosses (Boxoffice) that couldn t be more delightful (The Wall Street Journal)! Martin is Freddy Benson a small-time con man sleazing his way through Europe on whatever handouts he can scam. Caine is Lawrence ...

Impromptu

»rank: 5202

starring: Judy Davis, Hugh Grant, Mandy Patinkin, Bernadette Peters, Julian Sands
directed by: James Lapine

0ur opinion: :Still more Victorian country-house shenanigans: novelist George Sand (Judy Davis, affected but pretty darn charming) has eyes for Franz Liszt's young protégé Chopin (Hugh Grant, solid as always, but burdened by a silly Polish accent and a script that never lets him stretch out), but various lovers, jealous rivals, and Chopin's own overdeveloped sense of propriety conspire to confound her. lmpromptu is witty but overlong--probably 2O minutes of hijinks and repartee, not to mention several ...

The Day of the Jackal

The Day of the Jackal

»rank: 2412

starring: Edward Fox, Terence Alexander, Michel Auclair, Alan Badel, Tony Britton
directed by: Fred Zinnemann

0ur opinion: :With its high-intensity plot about an attempt to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle, the bestselling novel by Frederick Forsyth was a prime candidate for screen adaptation. Director Fred Zinnemann brought his veteran skills to bear on what has become a timeless classic of screen suspense. Not to be confused with the later remake The Jackal starring Bruce Willis (which shamelessly embraced all the bombast that Zinnemann so wisely avoided), this 1973 thriller opts for ...

Scrooge

starring: Albert Finney, Edith Evans, Kenneth More, Laurence Naismith, Michael Medwin
directed by: Ronald Neame

0ur opinion: :A mixed bag as variations on A Christmas Carol go, this 197O British musical tells the usual story of Scrooge (Albert Finney) and his spirits on Christmas Eve, although the whole thing is set to music by Leslie Bricusse. Except for Finney's feisty and involved performance, however, there isn't much to recommend this. The songs, which absorb so much of the evolving story line and emotions, are not all that good. Plenty of support, however, ...

starring: Ian McShane, Mary Peach, Antony Brown, Rosemary Leach, Brewster Mason
directed by: Claude Whatham

0ur opinion: : Anglophiles will find much to admire in the 1978 production Disraeli, a comprehensive look at the political and personal lives of one of that nation's most important historical figures. Benjamin Disraeli (18O4-1881), played by lan McShane (Deadwood, The Golden Compass) in a bravura performance, was 'an enigma even to myself,' as he puts it. Born to Jewish parents but baptized into the Anglican Church as a boy, he had already established a reputation as ...

On their debut album, 1999's Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie proved there's a reason why Northwest music critics continue to sing their praises. The foursome combined the emo sounds of Modest Mouse and 764-Hero with an inventive, and often sly, sentimentality. It worked wonders, but still sounded a little too lo-fi. Luckily, on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes the group has figured out all the production nuances that flawed that auspicious debut. The opening "Title Track" begins by sounding both crappy and shallow, but the band is merely pulling your leg; two minutes later, the tune expands into a gorgeous, well-produced masterpiece. The album never looks back. Ben Gibbard's songwriting continues to evolve--"Company Calls" segues into, what else, the slower "Company Calls Epilogue"--while the simple lyrics of "For What Reason" and "405" tell infectious stories that demand repeated listenings. Proof positive the Northwest is still churning out great music. --Jason Verlinde

The first Black Box Recorder album, 1998's England Made Me, was originally conceived by Auteurs and Baader Meinhof frontman Luke Haines as a typically baleful response to the cultural and political hysteria--respectively, Britpop and Tony Blair--then gripping Britain. Recorded with the help of former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer John Moore and singer Sarah Nixey, it did for Britpop roughly what the film Carrie did for the senior prom. The Facts of Life, the follow-up, maintains the withering glare but fixes it this time on the personal. The songs here obsess with unnerving clarity and mordant wit on the banal, cruel details of human relationships and are narrated perfectly by Nixey. Where her perfectly English-accented whisper infused England Made Me with the air of a bored aristocrat finding contemptuous amusement in the misery of others, on The Facts of Life she has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece. --Andrew Mueller
