The Prophecy

»rank: 16448

starring: Robert Foxworth, Talia Shire, Armand Assante, Richard A. Dysart, Victoria Racimo
directed by: John Frankenheimer

0ur opinion: :John Frankenheimer updates the mutant-monster films of the 195Os with a modern environmental twist in this well-meaning but cliché-ridden late-'7Os horror film. Robert Foxworth is so earnest it hurts as a rabble-rousing ghetto doctor who packs up his pregnant wife (Talia Shire) and heads out to the Maine woods to investigate claims of environmental pollution. That's the least of his concerns when a gooey mutant grizzly goes on the rampage and he joins forces with Native American activist Armand ...

0ur opinion: :Eccentric comedian Zach Galifianakis has earned an underground cult following for his idiosyncratic standup routines that recall the wry musings of David Cross mixed with the droll non sequitors of Mitch Hedberg--and often feature Galifianakis softly accompanying himself on piano. 0ur opinion: :A good wizard finds his magical powers diminishing as this Rankin/Bass production based on the Peter Dickinson novel opens. His nemesis, the evil 0mmadon (voiced by James Earl Jones at his deepest and scariest), swiftly takes advantage of the situation. Who will save the world? Why, none other than a young scientist-novelist-game inventor, named Peter Dickenson (mildly voiced by John Ritter), who is zapped from the future back into the time of dragons. The Wacky World of Mother Goose

»rank: 82543

starring: Margaret Rutherford, Bob McFadden, Bradley Bolke
directed by: Jules Bass

0ur opinion: :Bent on enslaving an entire land of nursery-rhyme characters (to mine diamonds!), the dastardly Count Warptwist sneers and chortles his crooked way through The Wacky World of Mother Goose. According to Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass (famed creators of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer), such can be expected when Mother Goose leaves King Cole in charge while she visits her ailing sister. Contorted as it sounds, the premise allows Rankin and Bass to concoct possible backstories on literary curiosities ...

San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
