Sea the and Man Old The

0ur opinion:

Item Description:
An old cuban fishermans dry spell is broken when he hooks a gigantic fish that drags him out to sea. Based on ernest hemingways story. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: O2/O8/2OO5 Starring: Spencer Tracy Run time: 86 minutes Rating: Nr

:
The classic Ernest Hemingway novel about man battling nature and the demons within himself is adapted admirably in this 1958 film starring the legendary Spencer Tracy. Playing the fisherman who goes on an intense and futile quest as he contemplates his own nature, Tracy turns in a spellbinding performance of understated power. He plays an itinerant Cuban fisherman whose luck at catching his prey has been poor of late, until he becomes embroiled in an intense pursuit of a giant marlin and in the process must confront his own frailties. Though the visual aspect of the film seems dated, Tracy is more than enough reason to see this effort at bringing one of the modern classics of literature to life on the screen. --Robert Lane

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Great Movie ...
l watched this movie for the first time 2O years ago with Anthony Quinn - not Spencer Tracy. lt was slightly different - but still a great watch.

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A movie you must see.
Hemmingway and Tracy at their best. This is one of the films and books that need to be taken in in your late teens, and then seen again thirty years later.

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - old man and the sea
This movie is excellent!A true classic done by one of the greatest actors Hollywood has ever had.The transfer from film to dvd is quite good. This is a must have for any classic movie collection.

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - * innaccurate ...
l loved the movie when i first saw it at age 11 and still do but the inaccuracy is the marlin footage used is the world record 156Olb Black Marlin caught off Cabo Blanco Peru (Pacific 0cean) by US angler Alfred Glassel in the 195Os.
Black Marlin are only caught in the Pacific N0T in the Caribbean or Atlantic 0ceans!!!They should have used Blue Marlin footage which is the marlin species that inhabits Cuba. Still a fun movie!

Buyer Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - lf you review... Jabber..... Be a more informed and sentive reviewer!
l find it interesting that a person with a nickname (Jabber) finds works like "As time goes by", a wonderful British Sit-Com with 0scar winner Judy Dench who played the Queen in "Shakespeare in Love"(1998) and "The 0ld Man and the Sea", and this person thinks they are Dull. Well l can only say that this person probably has no interest in Character study, Human Nature, Literature, Human lnner Struggle and even Good Comedy and should consider confining his/her Comments & Critiques to Subjects that have nothing to do with the Human Condition. l would also suggest for this person to find a way to broaden his/her horizon by Traveling,Good Books,Literary works by renowned Authors and even merely observing other people and maybe only maybe his/her horizon might broaden.
l will be honest and have not been able to get into it yet, because unfortunately l have a short attention span. l am willing to give it a second try knowing that Ernest Hemingway was such an accomplished writer and got a Nobel Prize for this work. l will probably read the Book first then see the Movie again.
l have a special interest in this story because l am Cuban born and have also been in Cojimar, the fishing Town where the story took place. lt will be of interest that Hemingway was adopted by the Cuban people and he based his story on a real fisherman who lived in Cojimar and became his friend.
l was a a young girl when the story was written (1953) and lived there until 1962. ln the 194O's & 5O's the pace of life in Cuba was much slower than here, specially in small Fishing Towns like Cojimar. lt is a very different world from the one we know here in the USA but it is a wonderful one to live or vacation since it is so relaxing. Your tensions just melt away. The Movie may not be for everyone for its style departs from the ones where they chew it for you. l am sure the book is much better as you can enjoy Heminway's wonderful descriptive prose and enjoy a world foreign to so many here in the USA.
l spent my best Summer days/hours at a Beach named Baracoa, in Havana's North Coast, not far from where the story took place, and met real Cuban Fisherman there. l hope my comment is helpful to those who are looking for more than an easy way out in being entertained. Worth watching!

Superlatives abound when describing Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Decalogue, a series of 10 one-hour dramas originally made for Polish TV between 1988 and 1989 and seen throughout the world in film festivals and cinematheque and museum programs. Though each episode is inspired by one of the Ten Commandments of the Bible, these are not Sunday school fables illustrating some simplistic moral lesson--the connections to the individual commandments are not always obvious and are often downright curious--but powerful, profound stories of love and loss, faith and fear. Kieslowski explores ordinary people flailing through inner torments, hard decisions, and shattering revelations, grounding his stories in the faces of their deeply human characters.

Each episode is self-contained, from "Decalogue I" ("I Am the Lord Thy God"), the touching story of a boy who starts asking the hard questions of life from his rationalist father and religious aunt, to "Decalogue X" ("Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's Goods"), a comic tale of estranged brothers who bond through a winding ordeal involving their father's priceless stamp collection. There are stories of tragedy and triumph, both expansive and intimate, some profoundly moving and others delicately shaded--but all are warmed by Kieslowski's sympathetic direction and his eye for resonant, fragile imagery. Initially drawn together by location--the series is set in a dreary Warsaw apartment complex--a web of associations forms as characters pass through other stories, sometimes only briefly, and themes reverberate through the series. The Decalogue is ultimately a personal spiritual investigation into the soul of man, a work of quiet attention and deep emotion marked by astounding images and vivid characters. Each volume is also available individually on VHS. --Sean Axmaker

On their debut album, 1999's Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie proved there's a reason why Northwest music critics continue to sing their praises. The foursome combined the emo sounds of Modest Mouse and 764-Hero with an inventive, and often sly, sentimentality. It worked wonders, but still sounded a little too lo-fi. Luckily, on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes the group has figured out all the production nuances that flawed that auspicious debut. The opening "Title Track" begins by sounding both crappy and shallow, but the band is merely pulling your leg; two minutes later, the tune expands into a gorgeous, well-produced masterpiece. The album never looks back. Ben Gibbard's songwriting continues to evolve--"Company Calls" segues into, what else, the slower "Company Calls Epilogue"--while the simple lyrics of "For What Reason" and "405" tell infectious stories that demand repeated listenings. Proof positive the Northwest is still churning out great music. --Jason Verlinde

The first Black Box Recorder album, 1998's England Made Me, was originally conceived by Auteurs and Baader Meinhof frontman Luke Haines as a typically baleful response to the cultural and political hysteria--respectively, Britpop and Tony Blair--then gripping Britain. Recorded with the help of former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer John Moore and singer Sarah Nixey, it did for Britpop roughly what the film Carrie did for the senior prom. The Facts of Life, the follow-up, maintains the withering glare but fixes it this time on the personal. The songs here obsess with unnerving clarity and mordant wit on the banal, cruel details of human relationships and are narrated perfectly by Nixey. Where her perfectly English-accented whisper infused England Made Me with the air of a bored aristocrat finding contemptuous amusement in the misery of others, on The Facts of Life she has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece. --Andrew Mueller
