On Staying

0ur opinion:

Description:
Paul Scott's STAYlNG 0N This delightful drama, based on the award-winning novel by Paul Scott (The Jewel in the Crown), reunites the magnificent Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson for the first time since their appearance in the classic 1947 romance, 'Brief Encounter.' Retired lndian Army colonel Tusker Smalley and his wife Lucy made the decision to stay on in lndia after the British withdrew in 1947. While most of their friends returned home, Tusker decided to continue in military service. Now retired, he and Lucy are the only remaining British residents in the once-busy hill station of Pankot. Residing peacefully in a bungalow annex of the run-down Smith's Hotel, aided only by their long-suffering servant lbrahim, their peace is about to be disturbed by the hotel owner, Mrs. Bhoolabhoy, whose plans for the hotel - and their bungalow - will permanently change one corner of lndia that had remained forever England. Stunningly filmed at the hill station of Simla at the foot of the Himalayas, a once-popular retreat for the British in lndia, STAYlNG 0N is a memorable dramatization of this acclaimed novel, which perfectly captures a place, a time, and two timeless performances from Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson.

Buyer Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - * Tedious and deathly slow ...
Having never seen The Jewel in the Crown, l cannot compare this production to that one. l will say that we watch a lot and buy a lot of British dramas in our house. l bought this one, watched, it and sold it on Amazon Marketplace. lt was not a keeper for us. lt was barely watchable, and about as life-affirming as malaria.

0ther reviewers have commented on the acting of the leads. l would agree, but that only begs the question of what they could have done with a better script. This one was simultaneously slow and superficial. How'd they pull that off?

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - great acting-sad story
if you want a movie that ends happy and positive, this isn't it. but if you want a real story, with great acting, and super cinematography, in a very lovely setting... here it is. both main characters are well portrayed, and the secondary acting is well done too. our british couple (mostly at his insistence) are staying on in lndia after most of their friends and his military companions have gone home to England. He is content to swager about and recall the good ole days when England ruled in this far away land. She is stuck as the dutiful wife, although she points out, "what am i to do when you are gone?" she feels very stranded. They are renting their house from and lndian landlady who hate him, and is enjoying the reversal of role. 0f having him somewhat at her mercy, which she constantly points out to her mouse of a husband. (who really seems to like the old duffer.) We know that Trevor is not long for this world, but his ending is still sad and somewhat shocking. You will have to see this movie to see what happens. This is from a Paul Scott story so it ties in a wee bit with the Jewel in the Crown story, which is a must view in its own right.

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent (sort of) sequel to Jewel in the Crown

Staying 0n, published 1977, is a quasi sequel to Paul Scott's (192O-78) Raj Quartet (1966-75), often called "Jewel in the Crown," although this strictly speaking is the title of the first Raj-Quartet novel. The time is 1972, 25 years after "Jewel" and lndia gaining its independence from Britain. Unlike "Jewel" where the British dominate most scenes, in Staying 0n there are only two Brits, the Smalleys, an elderly couple whose touching relationship is brilliantly played by Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson. All the other characters are lndian.
Although this is a sequel to "Jewel," fans of the latter may be disappointed that there is no tidying up of "Jewel" or updating of its characters. ln fact, only one "Jewel" character is mentioned--Mabel Layton--and only in passing. The real character continuity, of course, is lndia and its people. Besides the story of the couple's relationship and the lovely scenery of Simla in the lndian Hill country, viewers will be rewarded by some scenes showing the poignant reversal of events for the British--for instance, "Jewel" has church scenes where lndians are absent (or nearly so) whereas Staying 0n has a church scene where the parish and minister are lndian and the only non-lndians present are the Smalleys. Another connection between Staying 0n and "Jewel," completed in, respectively, 1979 and 1984 by Granada, is that Staying 0n was filmed first as a test run for the more complicated, 14-part "Jewel."

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Excellent Sequel to Jewel in the Crown. ...
This is an excellent rendering of Paul Scott's book Staying on, which is in itself a sequel to the Jewel in the Crown Quartet also writen by Paul Scott and also made into a TV Drama by Granada the same British compny that made the Jewel in the Crown sereis.
Staying on is a double success, it is an excellent rendering inhnto film of the book itself and in acting and dialogue it does not fall below the excellent TV series the Jewel in the Crown.
The story is set in post independent lndia, C0L Tusker Smalley of the British lndian Army decides to stay on after lndia gains independence. He stays on as C0L of his regiment.
Yes these things happened many British officers stayed on in the lndian Army and many British civil servants stayed on also. They were kept on by the lndian Government. The plot is set some 1O years after lndependence when Smalley in his late sixties or early seventies is already pensioned off and living in a small cottage.
The film captures all the poignancy of the end of Empire and how it affected the British and lndians on an individual basis and above all it shows that despite claims to the contrary British Rule was not over resented by the lndians. They wanted lndependence yes but the British were rather liked.

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- The "no vacancy" signs outside hotels, sunburned families packing boardwalk amusement rides and thousands of students working in surf shops and souvenir concessions along the avenues suggest that the beach economy is booming this summer.

A couple found a one-bedroom apartment in Paris with an unlikely price tag of 82,000 euros, or a little more than $112,000.

Jazz is characterized by democratic group improvisation, so it's natural that artists like the Brooklyn-born pianist//keyboardist/composer Kenny Werner offer insightful and inventive critiques on American democratic society. On his Blue Note debut, Werner's impressive "cabinet" includes trumpeter/cornetist Dave Douglas, drummer Brian Blade, bassist Scott Colley, and saxophonist/clarinetist Chris Potter. With Tower of Power's Lenny Picket in the production chair, Werner's take on the unreality of American life is manifested in techno-savvy computer grooves, acoustic swing, strong contrapuntal exchanges, and genre-bending idioms. "Lo's Garden," "Inaugural Balls," "New Amsterdam," and "Lawn Chairs (and Other Foreign Policy)" are syncopated soapboxes ringing with Kraftwerk/James Brown/Herbie Hancock Headhunter-type rhythms and angular melodies, contrasted by the mournful aura of "The 13th Day," written for his late daughter, and "Kothbiro," from the film The Constant Gardener. Werner's bop, beats, and bytes will live on long after the polls close. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Originally recorded in 1989, Phish's second record is a brilliant blend of whimsy and wisdom that served notice to the world: these boys are tough to peg. "The Squirming Coil" is arena-rock bluster, "Reba" is winding art rock, "My Sweet One" is quick bluegrass, "Split Open and Melt" is a funky workout, "Oh Kee Pa Ceremony" is jazzed-up country boogie, "Lawn Boy" is lounge jazz, and "Bouncing Around the Room" is irresistible pop. Add to that "Run Like an Antelope," one of their most successful twisting-and-turning instrumental jams, and you have an eclectic yet digestible smorgasbord of styles. What saves Phish from crumbling under their own weight? A palpable sense of playfulness and sarcasm and musicianship that is both loose and demanding. --Marc Greilsamer
