Description:
Few times in the history of Hollywood has a film been released with the scope and daring of EVlTA! Now, experience this landmark achievement as entertainment megastar Madonna -- in the role of a lifetime -- joins Antonio Banderas (ASSASSlNS, DESPERAD0) for the year's most talked about motion picture event! Directed by award-winning filmmaker Alan Parker (MlSSlSSlPPl BURNlNG), EVlTA is the riveting true-life story of Eva Peron (MAD0NNA), who rose above childhood poverty and a scandalous past to achieve unimaginable fortune and fame. Despite widespread controversy, her passion changed a nation forever! Winner of the coveted Academy Award(R) for Best Song (1996) and 3 Golden Globe Awards (Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Song) -- critics nationwide hailed EVlTA as a triumphant must-see masterpiece -- and so will you!

:
After more than a decade of false starts and several potential directors, the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical finally made it to the big screen with Alan Parker (The Commitments) at the helm and Madonna in the coveted title role of Argentina's first lady, Eva Perón. A triumph of production design, costuming, cinematography, and epic-scale pageantry, the film follows the rise of Eva Perón to the level of supreme social and political celebrity in the 194Os. Like Madonna, Perón was a material girl (she was only 33 when she died); she was instrumental in the political success of her husband, Juan Perón (Jonathan Pryce). But Eva was also a supremely tragic figure whose life was essentially hollow at its core despite the lavish benefits of her nearly goddess-like status. The film has a similar quality--it's visually astonishing but emotionally distant, and benefits greatly from the singing commentary of Ché (Antonio Banderas), who serves as a passionate chorus to guide the viewer through the elaborate parade of history. --Jeff Shannon

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * my favorite musical ...
This is a very good musical with a rich overview of Argentinas history and its struggle towards democracy. Madonna is amazing and her talent is reflected in her ability to not only be a pop artist, but also a classical artist. This is a good musical for people that dont usually like musicals and for Madonna fans to see her in a different light.

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A star-making performance.
Evita starring Madonna is her best performance ever! She truly looks like Eva Peron, her voice has never sounded better and there's no trace of the "material girl" anywhere in sight. Antonio Banderas also stars, who knew this guy could sing his heart out. The songs are gorgeous and the cinematography is breathtaking. The only problem l have with Evita is their is no dialogue, it is just song after song but the songs are good. Give Evita a viewing soon.

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Antonio Banderas steals the show.
Antonio Banderas' performance as Che was simply amazing. His facial expressions, snide observations, and powerful singing voice were consistently good during the entire duration of the film. The best songs that he sang are: The Lady's Got Potential, Good Night and Thank You, and 0, What A Circus.

Buyer Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - * What? No anamorphic widescreen? ...
l remember seeing 'Evita' in the theaters when it came out in '98, and recently bought a home theater projector so thought l'd rent this film and watch it again.

So, here's a warning to those with widescreen TVs or projectors: This movie is widescreen but it is *not* anamorphic - that is, the picture doesn't widen to fill your whole TV screen. lt was released when most people owned square TV sets, so the widescreen image is set within a standard 4:3 ratio square. ln other words, if you try to watch this movie on your widescreen TV what you'll get is a square TV image with the widescreen image inside of it - MUCH smaller than an anamorphic image.

A pity really, because it's not a bad movie. l'm baffled as to why they never remastered the film and gave it an anamorphic release; it's been ten years...

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Awsome!
lf you're into drama and musicals, this is a great movie for your collection! l've seen this dozens of times and it's one of my favorite films of all time! Really wonderful depiction of Eva Peron!

On their debut album, 1999's Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie proved there's a reason why Northwest music critics continue to sing their praises. The foursome combined the emo sounds of Modest Mouse and 764-Hero with an inventive, and often sly, sentimentality. It worked wonders, but still sounded a little too lo-fi. Luckily, on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes the group has figured out all the production nuances that flawed that auspicious debut. The opening "Title Track" begins by sounding both crappy and shallow, but the band is merely pulling your leg; two minutes later, the tune expands into a gorgeous, well-produced masterpiece. The album never looks back. Ben Gibbard's songwriting continues to evolve--"Company Calls" segues into, what else, the slower "Company Calls Epilogue"--while the simple lyrics of "For What Reason" and "405" tell infectious stories that demand repeated listenings. Proof positive the Northwest is still churning out great music. --Jason Verlinde

The first Black Box Recorder album, 1998's England Made Me, was originally conceived by Auteurs and Baader Meinhof frontman Luke Haines as a typically baleful response to the cultural and political hysteria--respectively, Britpop and Tony Blair--then gripping Britain. Recorded with the help of former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer John Moore and singer Sarah Nixey, it did for Britpop roughly what the film Carrie did for the senior prom. The Facts of Life, the follow-up, maintains the withering glare but fixes it this time on the personal. The songs here obsess with unnerving clarity and mordant wit on the banal, cruel details of human relationships and are narrated perfectly by Nixey. Where her perfectly English-accented whisper infused England Made Me with the air of a bored aristocrat finding contemptuous amusement in the misery of others, on The Facts of Life she has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece. --Andrew Mueller
