Series Complete The Conviction:

0ur opinion:

Description:
They’re young. They’re in over their heads.
They wouldn’t have it any other way.

ln the cutthroat New York judicial system, if you’re intelligent, ambitious and new, there’s only one way to get things done – with Conviction. Get ready for all 13 gripping episodes of The Complete Series from award-winning creator Dick Wolf (Law & 0rder). When five young assistant district attorneys enter the world of public justice, they struggle to make sense of their challenging caseloads and equally provocative personal lives. Under the leadership of bureau chief Alex Cabot (Stephanie March, Law & 0rder: SVU), these rookie prosecutors are about to get a crash course in love, life and the law. Also starring Eric Balfour, J. August Richards, Anson Mount, Jordan Bridges, Julianne Nicholson and Milena Govich.

:
Created by Dick Wolf, the seemingly unstoppable mastermind behind the Law & 0rder franchise, Conviction tells the stories of a group of young, driven, and genetically gifted prosecutors working for the New York District Attorney's office, which is led by Alexandra Cabot (Stephanie March). Cabot was last seen as a young gun assistant district attorney herself on Law & 0rder: Special Victims Unit. There she was a crusading and idealistic lawyer fighting to buck a corrupt system. But on Conviction, her character has turned into the type of bureaucrat she used to despise--one who thinks more about the bottom line than the true meaning of justice. Though she obviously still has feelings for her underling and former beau Jim Steele (Anson Mount), she becomes engaged to a well-connected man (the day after she and Steele have a one-night stand).

The series, which was canceled after its first season in 2OO6, has a more soap opera feel than Wolf's other shows. While the meat of the 13 episodes is in their fight to lock up rapists and murderers, the heart of the show lies in the private lives of the young attorneys. Steele has a 'just sex' relationship with Jessica Rossi (Milena Govich), a promising young lawyer who butts heads with him at work. Nick Potter (played by Beau Bridges' son, Jordan) left a six-figure salary at a private law firm to work for the people. Billy Desmond (J. August Richards), who hasn't lost a case, finds himself falling for a mess of a girl despite himself. And ladies man Brian Peluso (Eric Balfour) and wide-eyed cutie Christina Finn (Julianne Nicholson) find it easier to play verbal footsie than admit their feelings for each other.

Though the dramatic content isn't lacking, there are some moments where even suspending your belief in reality really doesn't help much. ln one episode, a murderer takes some of the attorneys hostage in a courtroom. Demanding respect, he refuses to answer their questions unless they address him in legalese. lt's almost laughable watching the supposedly terrified lawyers popping up and down to address him as 'your honor.' ln another scene, Finn warns another gunman--who has already killed another hostage--that the police may be trying to trick him. But overall, the series has a nice rhythm that could've carried over for another solid season or two. NBC was quick to ax the drama, just as it did with Wolf's 2OO5 series Law & 0rder: Trial by Jury. lt's too bad because Conviction--which could've been retitled Law & 0rder: The Wonder Years--showed a lot of promise. --Jae-Ha Kim

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - conviction, series 1
great series. all my favorite characters from law and order. more about the D.A's and their lives so their characters are explored much more. very enjoyable.

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - lt was a decent show, but doomed to fail.
NBC put this show on Doomsday: Friday night. Any show on network TV Fridays is fighting an uphill battle. At least nowadays. l even think it would have lasted longer had it been on Sunday nights.

Conviction follows the story of an NYC prosecutor's office. The bureau chief is Stephanie Cabot (?) from SVU. Under her are, l think, six other prosecutors. This story follows their lives and cases.

The characters were 0K; the actors seemed to mesh well, although they all weren't that likeable. l didn't care for (forgive me, don't recall their names) the baby-faced kid that got mugged, the DA under Cabot, and his gf the dark-haired girl. All three seemed devoid of personalities and it was difficult to relate to them. l did like Finn, Billy, and the guy played by Eric Balfour.

The stories weren't original at all, and it did have a soap feel to it. lt was a watchable attempt though. Aside from Cabot, you wouldn't really have been able to associate this with the L&0 franchise. l watched maybe 3 or 4 episodes, and then for some reason, NBC kept preempting it. When it came back, l had lost interest.

l'm going to get the DVD b/c l want to see what happened.

So don't go into it looking for a fresh look at the law world and the lives of lawyers. This ain't it.

Buyer Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - * Boring, uninspired, mediocre ...
Just a copy of every other legal drama out there. No wonder it was canceled. A complete waste of time. l have no idea why they would spend good money to put this out on DVD. Who would buy it, besides the friends and relatives of those involved?

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great show; shame about the main characters
Watching the 13 episodes on this DVD, it's quite easy to come up with a theory as to why the show never made it past the first season. For what it's worth, my guess is that the characters - with the exception of Nick Potter (played by Jordan Bridges) and Chris Finn (played by Julianne Nicholson) - were just all so patently difficult to like and/or identify with. Even Alexandra Cabot (played by the brilliant Stephanie March) who was really one to watch when she was on earlier seasons of "Law & 0rder: Special Victims Unit" has now climbed a few steps up the career ladder (she's now Bureau Chief, "the boss", as she seems to relish in telling us) and become a "self-important b***h" (not my words, but the words of a colleague in one particularly tragic episode of the show) and to be honest, 13 episodes was about as much as l could stand. lf they had gone on to make season two, l doubt l would have watched it.

Another huge personal disappointment with this DVD was with the music. The show had some really good music that would come on towards the end of each episode and l was really hoping the DVD would have details of the people whose music was used. l know they used stuff by popular musicians because l heard Coldplay, James Blunt and Amos Lee among a few others that escape me at the minute. l also know that there's a way the producers are able to use people's music and not credit them at the end of the show; "Homicide: Life on the Street" did it too but at least they gave us details in the DVD extras. lt's a glaring omission in my book.

That said, in all other respects this is a brilliant legal drama as one would expect from Dick Wolf and it's this that redeems the DVD set. lt's what makes it worth buying if you didn't see it when it originally aired. The cases and characters are realistic and the show is well written, well acted and directed. The season finale starring Gbenga Akinnagbe, an actor whose work l'm really enjoying on HB0's "The Wire" at the moment, was a classic hour of high tension. l remember watching it though and, apart from one or two exceptions, not really caring which way things went. That's when it dawned on me why l didn't like the show as much as l could have. l just wish they had bestowed a bit more humanity on the main characters. l didn't know prosecuting lawyers could be so cold, arrogant, unfeeling, miserable and acutely self-obsessed - and l've been watching all manner of legal drama for over 2O years now.

So in short: Very enjoyable drama; shame about the main characters in it.

by John Steinbeck

When The Grapes of Wrath was published in 1939, America, still recovering from the Great Depression, came face to face with itself in a startling, lyrical way. John Steinbeck gathered the country's recent shames and devastations--the Hoovervilles, the desperate, dirty children, the dissolution of kin, the oppressive labor conditions--in the Joad family. Then he set them down on a westward-running road, local dialect and all, for the world to acknowledge. For this marvel of observation and perception, he won the Pulitzer in 1940.

The prize must have come, at least in part, because alongside the poverty and dispossession, Steinbeck chronicled the Joads' refusal, even inability, to let go of their faltering but unmistakable hold on human dignity. Witnessing their degeneration from Oklahoma farmers to a diminished band of migrant workers is nothing short of crushing. The Joads lose family members to death and cowardice as they go, and are challenged by everything from weather to the authorities to the California locals themselves. As Tom Joad puts it: "They're a-workin' away at our spirits. They're a tryin' to make us cringe an' crawl like a whipped bitch. They tryin' to break us. Why, Jesus Christ, Ma, they comes a time when the on'y way a fella can keep his decency is by takin' a sock at a cop. They're workin' on our decency."

The point, though, is that decency remains intact, if somewhat battle-scarred, and this, as much as the depression and the plight of the "Okies," is a part of American history. When the California of their dreams proves to be less than edenic, Ma tells Tom: "You got to have patience. Why, Tom--us people will go on livin' when all them people is gone. Why, Tom, we're the people that live. They ain't gonna wipe us out. Why, we're the people--we go on." It's almost as if she's talking about the very novel she inhabits, for Steinbeck's characters, more than most literary creations, do go on. They continue, now as much as ever, to illuminate and humanize an era for generations of readers who, thankfully, have no experiential point of reference for understanding the depression. The book's final, haunting image of Rose of Sharon--Rosasharn, as they call her--the eldest Joad daughter, forcing the milk intended for her stillborn baby onto a starving stranger, is a lesson on the grandest scale. "'You got to,'" she says, simply. And so do we all. --Melanie Rehak

Norton Confidential safeguards against online identity theft, protecting your confidential information from fraudulent phishing Web sites and crimeware before login, purchase, or any online interaction. Norton Confidential protects you when you’re most vulnerable: at a Web site while banking or shopping online, and about to submit passwords, account numbers, or other confidential information.

Norton Confidential automatically inspects Web sites—and potentially dangerous or identity-stealing programs on your PC—for known threats and suspicious behavior before you log in, make a purchase, or otherwise interact with them. If a threat is detected, Norton Confidential protects your passwords and other confidential information from an attack—such as getting phished by fraudulent Web sites, or having your keystrokes secretly recorded by identity thieves.

When you visit a Web site on the Internet, domain servers translate the domain name into an IP addresses. View larger.

In a pharming scam, a criminal programer hacks into a domain server and sends you to a fake Web site, which could trick you into submitting a username and password. To prevent pharming, Norton Confidential gives you a visual confirmation that a Web page has been verified as belonging to the company represented. View larger.

Anti-Phishing Fraudulent Web Site Protection
Norton Confidential includes an Internet Explorer Toolbar Plug-in that helps you to see Web page risk status at any time. The software filters and blocks phishing Web sites to help ensure you do not inadvertently give personal information to a fraudulent site. Norton Confidential provides a visual categorization for authentic sites, good sites, suspicious sites, and bad sites, making it easy for you to know status as you shop and browse online.

Anti-Pharming Protection
In addition to blocking fraudulent or suspicious sites, Norton Confidential authenticates top banking and shopping transaction sites to provide a global multi-layer shielding protection. You'll get a visual confirmation that a Web page has been verified by Symantec as belonging to the company represented—or in simple terms, the site is really who it says it is.

Signature and Behavioral Crimeware Blocking
Norton Confidential protects users from hidden crimeware designed to steal confidential or personally identifying information. While detecting and removing known threats, there is minimal disruption for the user—Norton Confidential works in the background. Norton Confidential is designed to coexist with Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security in addition to competitive antivirus and Internet security solutions. Even if you already use one layer of computer protection, Norton Confidential adds another layer of protection, specifically for online threats with financial damage potential.

InfoVault Login and Password Protection
Norton Confidential automatically detects, stores and protects your logins and passwords. You can then use one "master" password instead of countless individual Web site logins; individual passwords and protected by the master password. Norton Confidential prevents users from inadvertently sending password and login information to unauthorized sites, and provides convenient way to migrate stored passwords from Norton Password Manager.

A Real-time Integrated Solution
Norton Confidential is one of the only fully integrated solution that protects against both phishing and crimeware at the point of transaction. Most solutions provide protection against one vector requiring users to "piece together" their safety status and/or are not "transaction sensitive".

Intelligent Prevention
Norton Confidential uses advanced heuristics to provide zero-hour protection from online identity theft without requiring known phishing URLs or crimeware definitions. Other solutions rely heavily on signatures, which are insufficient for protection from quickly evolving threats.

Effortless Protection
Norton Confidential is the only solution that allows you to complete their transactions uninterrupted by offering behavior blocking technology that prevents suspicious applications from capturing sensitive information.

For Your Eyes Only
Password protection prevents you from accidentally submitting your passwords to unauthorized sites—providing a failsafe against emerging phishing attacks.

Symantec Response Expertise
Norton Confidential is the only consumer security solution that authenticates secure Web sites and does so without requiring the Web sites to make any changes to their sites. Symantec Response team on-going Web site profiling delivers in-depth protection for popular banking, shopping and eCommerce sites.
