0ur opinion:

:
George Lucas transports audiences back to the future with Star Wars: Episode l, The Phantom Menace, the first installment of a prequel trilogy in which the director imagines the foundation for the entire six-part saga. Despite receiving a storm of adverse criticism (notably for Jar Jar Binks), Lucas continually fascinates with his ability to place his characters--some new, some old, some CGl--in the same dramatic situations posed in the original trilogy: whether it be the juxtaposition of primitives with technologically advanced societies or the timeless battle between good and evil, the very familiarity of these recurring scenarios and rhythms galvanizes the viewer. 0f course, the state-of-the-art visual effects contribute mightily to the final impact: the kinetic Pod Race sequence, the epic military battles, the Romanesque grandeur of Naboo, the underwater city of 0toh Gunga, the decadent brio of Tatooine, and the dizzying skyscrapers of the city planet Coruscant. --Kevin Mulhall

lf The Phantom Menace was the setup, then Attack of the Clones is the plot-progressing payoff, and devoted Star Wars fans are sure to be enthralled. Ten years after Episode l, Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman), now a senator, resists the creation of a Republic Army to combat an evil separatist movement. The brooding Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is resentful of his stern Jedi mentor, 0bi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), tormented by personal loss, and showing his emerging 'dark side' while protecting his new love, Amidala, from would-be assassins. Youthful romance and solemn portent foreshadow the events of the original Star Wars as Count Dooku (a.k.a. Darth Tyranus, played by Christopher Lee) forges an alliance with the Dark Lord of the Sith, while lavish set pieces showcase George Lucas's supreme command of all-digital filmmaking. All of this makes Episode ll a technological milestone, savaged by some critics as a bloated, storyless spectacle, but still qualifying as a fan-approved precursor to the pivotal events of Episode lll. --Jeff Shannon

Buyer Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - * star wars dvds 1 and 2 ...
the star wars movies of course cannot be compared to the original movies but they are a good way to introduce how anikan was not the villian but actually the victim of a horrible life. these star wars movies are still very good and are good to fit in with the original movies.

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - These two movies are brilliant!!!
These movies are brilliant!!

Granted, they are not near as good as Star Wars Episode lll, but l guess that is only to be expected.

But when you watch all six tigether in your big screen, it will all be worth it!

l do reccomend this on DVD, not video.

DVD you get more picture and GREAT special Features!

lf l could give this 12 stars, l would.

Buyer Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Buy the separate Widescreen releases instead!
lt puzzles me why Fox only chose to offer a PAN-AND-SCAN box of the first two Star Wars prequels.

lf you're a fan of these films, it's much better to buy the separate widescreen releases of each. You won't get the pretty slipcase, but at least you're getting the whole movie and not a butchered pan-and-scan version.

lt is rumored that when Episode lll comes out on DVD this November, Fox will release a box set of all three prequels in their proper Widescreen Anamorphic format. Hopefully that rumor is true. (Though, since l already own the WS versions of Episodes l and ll, l'll forgo the box and pick up the regular release of lll.)

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - * 0ne okay movie, one better movie. ...
l was one of the many people who didn't like the Phantom Menace, and considered it a major disappointment from the last three movies. l was not impressed by the acting and script, and found Jar Jar Binks to be annoying. l liked the visual effects and everything else in the movie to consider it an 0K film, but could've been alot better.

l was very anxious to see Attack of the Clones when it came out at the movies, because of the good word of mouth on it. When l saw it at the movies, l loved it very much. lt had almost everything l was looking for in a Star Wars movie, except for the good acting from the two leads, and better romantic dialogue. But l still loved it as much as the other films. You shouldn't buy both movies together, because you may not like one of them, or both, but what l would suggest is renting The Phantom Menace first, then Attack of the Clones to make a decision if you want to buy both movies.

The word Baraka means "blessing" in several languages; watching this film, the viewer is blessed with a dazzling barrage of images that transcend language. Filmed in 24 countries and set to an ever-changing global soundtrack, the movie draws some surprising connections between various peoples and the spaces they inhabit, whether that space is a lonely mountaintop or a crowded cigarette factory. Some of these attempts at connection are more successful than others: for instance, an early sequence segues between the daily devotions of Tibetan monks, Orthodox Jews, and whirling dervishes, finding more similarity among these rituals than one might expect. And there are other amazing moments, as when sped-up footage of a busy Hong Kong intersection reveals a beautiful symmetry to urban life that could only be appreciated from the perspective of film. The lack of context is occasionally frustrating--not knowing where a section was filmed, or the meaning of the ritual taking place--and some of the transitions are puzzling. However, the DVD includes a short behind-the-scenes featurette in which cinematographer Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi) explains that the effect was intentional: "It's not where you are that's important, it's what's there." And what's here, in Baraka, is a whole world summed up in 104 minutes. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

The tricky topic of interracial romance gets a sexy, charming, and unexpectedly realistic treatment in Something New. Kenya (Sanaa Lathan, Out of Time, Alien Vs. Predator), a successful accountant, gets set up on a blind date with Brian (Simon Baker, The Ring Two)--only to discover that he's white, leading her to cut the date short. At a party, Kenya admires the garden and gets introduced to the landscape architect: Brian. Thus begins a bumpy but increasingly sparky relationship, despite opposition from Kenya's friends and family, as well as Kenya and Brian's own internal resistance. Make no mistake, Something New is a mainstream romantic comedy, with ridiculously attractive people grappling with problems that get solved with just a little too much ease--but along the way, Kriss Turner's script, Sanaa Hamri's direction, and Baker's and especially Lathan's performances ground the movie in something resembling the real world. Kenya's and Brian's emotional terrain has a genuine texture to it; the rhythm of the dialogue and the visual pacing allows their characters to breathe and become more genuine and vivid than your standard rom-com lovers. The strong supporting cast--including Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Next Friday), and Blair Underwood (Full Frontal)--doesn't hurt. But Lathan owns the movie; this actress deserves true stardom. --Bret Fetzer
